The promotion of knowledge of languages in South Tyrol is managed by the office for Bilingualism and Foreign Languages of the Italian Culture Department and by the Office for Lifelong education of the German Culture Department. The office for Bilingualism and Foreign Languages promotes the learning of German, of Italian for migrants, as well as of other foreign languages, while the office for Lifelong education is committed to promoting the learning of Italian, of German for migrants and of other foreign languages in general.

Below is a description of the objectives and priorities of both offices:

For years now, the office for Bilingualism and Foreign Languages of the Italian Culture Department has been strategically committed to enhancing the learning of German as a second language and of the South Tyrolean culture, alongside the promotion of other languages and cultures, including Italian for foreigners.

The office offers a variety of proposals diversified by language, age group and interests. In four decades of activity, the office has designed projects ranging from consulting and information services on various types of courses and study-abroad programs for adults and children, to civic-linguistic training courses aimed at the integration of migrants in the local communities.

Moreover, for several years the office has been offering exam sittings for language certification qualifications recognized internationally, that can be used as education credits and are leveraged for student and professional work mobility purposes.

In particular, the office supports two important facilities: the Multilingual Centre in Bolzano and the Multimedia Language Centre in Merano, both serving as centres for autonomous language learning and language teaching, where books and multimedia resources can be consulted and borrowed for free. The Centres offer customized language consulting on several levels; in addition, they host linguistic-cultural events aimed at bringing the public closer to languages and cultures, connecting people who share similar cultural interests and sensibilities. Some of such events include original-language movies, the Language Café, the English conversation club and spaces dedicated to language partners participating in the Language Volunteering project.

Finally, the Office for Bilingualism and Foreign Languages manages the granting of financial benefits to associations and cooperatives for the promotion of German as a second language, as well as of other languages.
