Crossing space and time: Turkey
Where Europe and Asia meet
|
|
The next event of the project “On the Way to New Cultures” will be dedicated to Turkey. At the opening the people attending the event will receive a tulip bulb: this flower originally arrived in Europe via Turkey. For oriental people the tulip is the symbol of loving declaration and, as such, it is still very much admired by Turks.
The opening of “Crossing space and time: Turkey” is on Thursday 6 th October 2005, at 6.00 p.m. at the Trevi Cultural Centre, via Cappuccini 28, Bolzano, Italy. The event, organized by the provincial Department of Italian Culture - Culture Bureau, continues until 16 th October, daily from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m., Thursday 10.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. Free entrance.
Turkey boasts a very ancient history: the Turkish presence represents the most recent period, constituting 'only' several centuries.
It was in Anatolia, in Ç atalh ö y ü k, that the most ancient remains of urban settlements were found.

Afterwards there were the Hittites, the Assyrians, the Greeks in Asia Minor (including the ten-year war for Troy, spoken of by Homer who may himself have been a 'Turk' from Izmir, the ancient Smyrna).
We may also include legendary personalities like King Midas, Croesus of Lydia and Alexander the Great. Then there was Hellenism, the arrival of the Romans as well as Bysantium, that became Constantinopole, capital of the Eastern Roman Empire.
In the year 1453 the Ottomans conquered this great city and their empire lasted, despite ups and downs, until the First World War.
In order to bring the visitors nearer to an understanding of this country, eastern and western at the same time, and in order to build a bridge between cultures, an itinerary was devised using images by Gianclaudio Macchiarella from the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice, called “A Nearer East”. Throughtexts, photographs and reproductions the itinerary will investigate the artistic and cultural relations between Turkey, Italy and Europe. Moreover, a multimedia site will go into greater details with more informations on the themes of the three sections forming the itinerary.
Top level conferences allow us to cast a glance at the long and complex history of this geographical area, while guided listening introduces to the Sufi music.
The name “Crossing space and time. Turkey” suggests the link to Central Asia, playing a role along with Pakistan from the previous encounter of “On the Way to New Cultures” at the beginning of 2005.
Turkey is an obligatory choice in view of its possible entrance into the European Union and considerating the fact that the year 2005 has been declared year of the Mediterranean. |

“On the Way to New Cultures” was begun in July 2001 by the provincial Department of Italian Culture - Culture Bureau; the project received the patronage of the European Commission from the outset. The scientific consultant of “On the Way to New Cultures” is Mario Nordio from the University Ca’ Foscari in Venice.
The intention is to present the most special cultural and artistic aspects of 'other' cultures - 'new' because they are still less familiar to us, but ancientin terms of history and civilisation - in particular as far as shared common factors with our world are concerned, in the conviction that knowledge is the first step to understanding and acceptance.
Artists, experts and university teachers from 12 countries have taken part in the project events so far.
