Towards new cultures
A conference to discuss our cultural future

The “Towards new cultures” project, promoted by the Culture Office of the Department of Culture of the Province of Bolzano Alto Adige, is further enhanced by a new initiative of great insight and prestige.
Since July 2001 it has presented, through a series of events highly appreciated by the public, different aspects of new – in the sense of still relatively unknown - cultures, while investigating, at the same time the signs of the birth of "new cultures”, the fruit of the meeting and interaction of different civilisations. To complete this phase, the organisers are keen to weigh up the situation, not by summarising what has been done but by "highlighting the space that this theme opens up to culture and to the institutions", as pointed out by the project
curator, Mario Nordio of the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.

The conference “TOWARDS NEW CULTURES. The cultural future”, scheduled to take place on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 June 2008 at the Trevi Centre in via Cappuccini 28, Bolzano, will be attended, on the one hand, by distinguished cultural and social personalities originating from the areas treated over the past years, from the Middle East to China, also including figures who are well-known in our country, and, on the other hand, by representatives of Italian Institutions (Local and Regional Authorities) who will share their experiences on the subject of the meeting of cultures and the formation of new cultures in Italy and the Mediterranean.
The themes to be treated over the two days are underlined by their titles: “BRINGING THE ELSEWHERE WITH US. Experiences in cultural transformations” and “ELSEWHERE AND AMONG US. The transformation of cultures".

On the evening of 27 June, the programme also includes an extremely interesting musical event to take place in the Auditorium of via Dante, to which the general public is invited. It represents an opportunity to experience, in a pleasant and tangible manner, the meaning of cultural transformation, of the formation of new cultures.
The event involves a concert of the Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio, which –as everyone knows – is composed of musicians from a wide variety of countries and cultures. But it is not so much this peculiarity that distinguishes it, but rather the Orchestra's ability to create, on the basis of this cultural heterogeneity, an innovative type of music that is not a folkloristic re-visitation of ethnic styles of music, but a new and original musical language.

The initiative, for which prestigious sponsorships have been requested, can already boast the support of the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and of UNESCO and it supports the campaign “1001 Azioni per il dialogo” (1001 Actions for dialogue), promoted by the “Anna Lindh” Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.
