Introduction by Mario Nordio, scientific consultant of “On the Way to New Cultures”
For the first meeting of the cycle devoted to Russia two conferences were proposed dealing with a particular and special theme: Russia and Orthodoxy. A dual concept that has always remained topical for a thousand years of Russian history, even when it may seem paradoxical. In the same way it could appear at least unusual to couple saints and politics, as occurred in the second conference.
It was a kind of prologue to more profound meetings for the programme in the years following.
In this context it is worth remembering that in South Tyrol, in Merano, there is the oldest Italian orthodox church: St Nicholas the Thaumaturge.
The conferences were in step with the initiative of the Office for Bilingualism and Foreign Languages, entitled “Russian? The Land of the Firebird speaks”.
