This was the first of the meetings reserved within the scope of the project “On the Way to New Cultures” for the various expressions of the Hebrew world.
The cycle is called “Orbita di stella” (Star Orbit) and the name refers to the spread of cultural testimonies that are to be found in almost every country and every continent which maintain a unifying cord even through their variety.
In South Tyrol the Jewish presence has been documented since the Middle Ages; more recently, at the end of the 19th century, in Merano a lively community sprung up. Visiting the local Jewish Museum and the synagogue, built in year 1901, it is possible to learn about the history of this people.
The organisation of the day was established with the collaboration of the Jewish Community in Merano.
All day long documents and objects from the Jewish Museum of Merano were on show , and it was possible to browse through 100 books on Jewish questions, all published in the last three years. Explanatory panels introduced the history of the local community. An expert gave explanations about the exhibited materials and there was Jewish background music. In the morning short films and a Yiddish movie were shown.
