The Joy of the Song of Songs
Amos Luzzatto, President of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities
Introduction by Mario Nordio, Scientific consultant of “On the Way to New Cultures”
This was the second meetingwith “Orbita di stella” (Star Orbit),the cycle devoted to the multiform expressions of Jewish culture, diverse but everywhere connected by a common thread. The theme was the ‘song´’, both as musicality and as high poetry. The meeting, divided into two parts, took place between the Jewish holidays of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) and Sukkoth (Feast of the Tabernacle).
Jewish liturgy has always been intertwined with music. Since ancient times, Jewish prayer has been pronounced through chanting and musical harmonisation. Between the 19 th and 20 th centuries such harmonies became part of a cultivated musical patrimony.
The Song of Songs: few biblical texts have bean read from such different points of view. It is considered a collection of love songs of ancient Israel, or an allegory of the love between God and the Jewish community; it was ascribed to Salomon or to an unknown author, and challenged the skills of commentators.
